Sewage

Toilet systems are likely to be affected in an emergency.  Pipes may be broken, the sewage system may flood, and the pumping machinery could break down.  Human waste can spread disease.  Do not use the toilet after an earthquake.

Use one of the following makeshift toilets until advised by authorities.

Regular toilet with makeshift arrangements
  • secure a strong leak-proof plastic bag inside your toilet and use to collect sewage (human waste)
  • tie the bag securely after several uses and store for disposal
  • keep a bucket of water for handwashing water and change regularly.
Rubbish bin or bucket method
  • secure a strong leak-proof plastic bag around a bucket or rubbish bin and use to collect sewage
  • put half a cup of liquid bleach in the bag
  • make a seat from two planks of wood or use a toilet seat on top of the container
  • keep the bin completely covered when not in use, to prevent attracting flies
  • when full, tie the top of the bag securely and place inside another bag, then store for disposal
  • keep a bucket of water for handwashing water and change regularly.
Longdrop
  • dig a deep pit 20 metres away from your home and screen if possible
  • make sure it is downhill from any water source
  • cover sewage with soil after each use
  • use garden lime or disinfectant to reduce odours, and mark all sites
  • keep a bucket of water for handwashing water and change regularly.
